If you do experience a problem using the Exploit Submission Wizard,
please scan through the list of known problems and fixes below.
If you are using a release of the Wizard prior to that shown on the download page, we would recommend you download the current version as we may have already fixed your problem.
If you problem is not listed, the first step is to re-install the Wizard. To complete this task you need to do the following:
- Locate the directory /wizard/data
- Copy all files ending in .sav in this directory to another directory. (This will copy your saved sessions to a safe place).
- Use the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to remove the current installation of the Wizard.
- Return to the Wizard directory and delete all remaining files and directories.
- DELETE THE FILE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WEBSTER.OCX - THIS IS IMPORTANT!
- Re-start your PC.
- Re-run the installation program to install the wizard.
- Re-start the wizard and update the engine data files.
- After the update copy the .sav files back into the newly created data directory.
- Re-start Windows to complete the update of the data files.
The Submission Wizard uses the very latest version of the OLEAUT32.DLL Microsoft file.
When you install the Wizard onto your system you may be prompted to re-start your system to complete the installation, at this stage it is very important you answer yes to this prompt and allow the Wizard setup to restart your system at this point, do not answer no - the Wizard installation will fail if you answer no.
If you are not asked to re-start your PC, but the problem still persists, make sure when you install the Wizard no other software is running at the same time - these other applications may also be locking the file preventing the update.
Problems Verifying Key / Updating Engines in V4.3
The problem you have can be caused by your ISP or their backbone provider fitting a high level cache system. In a nutshell, it means the ISP or backbone provider your ISP is connected to can reduce the amount of external requests on their network, therefore reducing their costs and speeding up access for their client, which is good for you and for them.
Unfortunately some cache systems do not work fully with the standard Submission Wizard, the symptoms are very obvious, after an engine update you will be left with a single engine, and if you have a key it will not be verified and therefore the wizard will not allow you to submit.
The solution fortunately is simple, you require the Submission Wizard 4.3R patch, this will allow you to tunnel through the cache, ensuring your postings are made and not cached.
To download the patch, click here. Once downloaded, re-install the full wizard to ensure you have a full set of engines, then run the patch program you have just downloaded, installing it in the same directory as the main Wizard.
When you next start the Wizard you will see in the menu bar it is version 4.3R.
DO NOT install this patch unless you have the specific problems identified above, ie one or no engines after an engine update. V4.3R is slower during submission than the standard version as it has to do extra work to tunnel through the 'invisible' proxy, and at times may appear to lock if used with a standard connection - if it does just leave it alone for up to 5 minutes, this will clear and the next time the Wizard runs it will avoid the engines that caused the problem.
Microsoft have resolved this problem with the release of Windows 98.
If you are still using Windows 95, Microsoft have issued an update to Windows 95 which should help fix your problem, to quote their page...
"This update resolves a memory leak which occurs when opening and closing a Socket using the Windows Sockets API.
Without this update, running a Windows Sockets application over a long period of time, especially one which opens and closes a large number of sockets, will result a significant resource drain. This can cause the Windows swapfile to grow very large, overall deterioration of performance, and over time, possible system instability. This update allows users to better run such applications for long periods of time without loss of system performance and stability, and without requiring users to reboot their computers periodically to free system resources.
Customers who need to run Windows Sockets applications continuously over long periods of time, especially applications which use a large number of sockets, will benefit from this update."Unfortunately Microsoft are also busy reworking their site, so this file moves about a bit, but last time we
looked you could download the update at
http://premium.microsoft.com/support/downloads/dp2728.asp
The latest file was:- Kernel32.dll version 4.00.951 (7/29/97, 337,016 bytes)
More information about this file and how to install it is currently available at
http://premium.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q148/3/36.asp?PR=NTW&FR=0&M=S&
We also suggest you install Service Pack 1 available through the same page as this can also cause problems. This is available at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/updates.htm
Run-time error 429 - no appropriate license to use this functionality
This error is caused when another software program has entered invalid information into the Windows '95 system registry about one or more of the common Microsoft support files.
The following procedure should restore the Windows '95 settings to work with all applications.
- Re-start Windows '95 to complete the update of the data files.
This problem was fixed in Version 3.00
90% of problems with OC25.DLL are caused by a conflict with Vshield or other high interrupt usage software, for example Compaq power management utilities or Ram Boost.
The only solution we have at present is to disable these programs when running the Wizard if they appear to be causing the conflict.
The Wizard wont connect!
The connection problem will probably be caused by the winsock on your computer.
The Winsock file allows all applications to talk to the net and is supplied by your ISP, however many ISP's are still providing 16 bit winsocks, and the Win 95 version of the wizard requires a 32 bit sock.
The only answer is to download and use the 16 bit version (Windows 3.1) until such a time as your ISP updates their connection software.
